Just Do It? | Poem

3 min read

I contemplate suicide as a means to escape

Maybe if I just do it I would stop causing this pain

To myself and the ones I love, I feel I'm just in the way

Locked into my walls, out I see no way

I'm so sensitive to the world out and in

Everything it seems nothing more than a dead end

Am I being dramatic, is it all in my head

Walk into my mind, and it's a place filled with dread

The same old poem I've wrote more than a hundred times (from behind closed doors)

What have I not penned to paper that doesn't haunt my time

This isn't loving myself, I love beating myself down

If I made it permanent, what's the result of being in the ground

My MoM would be alone, struggling through it herself

My friends would suffer more, hearts broken cuz I left

She said she'd rather me talking than end inna coffin

Is that still true... or has the love done lost it

I'm tired of living for others, hard enough to live for myself

I'm trying to hold on, and deal with these cards I've dealt

I'm scribing for help, is anybody listening?

I'm scribing for help...is there anyone listening?

DISCLAIMER: This poem is not a cry for help, to seek pity, or draw attention. I'm okay. I'm going through some things and reconciling with some things that I have done. But I am okay. Thank you.

The reason I'm posting this poem is because of posts I've been seeing from brothas I know as colleagues struggling with it mentally. Two men who I recently talked to who are dealing with some heavy situations told me that suicide had crossed they mind.

This past Saturday, I had that moment too. The feeling of it came in my vicinity, and it came in the form of "this may be the best way to change things in my life". It came to a certain sound level that was tangible to me...and caught it. Literally, caught it and put it in pen. I wrote a poem on how exactly how I was feeling, played a song that was about suicide and why they decided to live on, and then I let the feeling/thoughts go.

I felt compelled to share with one of them this poem, and I feel obligated to post here for someone who is going through it that needs to read it.

To The Man I Was Texting:

I wrote this Saturday Rising. You are not alone, and there is a way out. I don't have the answer for what that is for you, but I have to believe it is there. Because if I can believe it for you, it is there for me. So, keep on walking through it, find it for your own sake, because you need you here, just as much as we do too. I love you.

I Believe It For ME, & I Can Believe For YOU.

I make my way out through writing and with intention. I'm 35 years old, and I have no business taking myself out the game because I have survived so much. I'm too damn smart to let myself outsmart me out of myself to take my own life that is worth living. I acknowledged the thought, processed it (via writing) examined it, and moved on. That's part of my way through it. Keep living y'all, find your way through it and/or create the solution that works for your life's betterment.
